My daughter recently did a last minute request for a ‘pioneer dress’ for a field trip she was going on. Normally I say ‘no’ to last minute requests, but as a girl I always wanted a ‘Laura Ingalls’ dress, so I thought I would try!
The dress is the Precious Dress by Scientific Seamstress. I’ve used this dress as the base for so many costumes now! I picked up a poly/cotton shirting from our local store, Marshall Fabrics. The advantage of a poly/cotton over a quilting cotton is that it is a full 60″ wide and doesn’t wrinkle as fast. The blue trim is a cheap polyester broadcloth. I made the apron for another costume; it is self drafted (just a few rectangles with ties).
The bonnet was sewn using this tutorial. I didn’t have ribbon to match so I did some quick fabric tubes for the straps.
My daughter is over the moon with her costume and can’t wait to go on her field trip tomorrow. I love that sewing gives me the skills to help her make some amazing memories!
Do you sew costumes? I’d love to hear about any favourites; leave me a comment!
