Last year I had the opportunity to be part of an epic tour, all about Canadian designers and suppliers of all things bras. After months of researching and practicing, I sewed this teal and black sequined bra and panty set that are still in heavy rotation in my closet.
This year the organizers are up back, this time with the theme ‘unwired’, focusing on lingerie that doesn’t include wires.
I chose to sew up the Empire Camisole and Nightie by Jan Bones. The printed pattern arrived very quickly and I set to work sewing up a sample. The pattern instructed the sewist to choose their ‘normal’ cup size, which should have set off warning signs since over 80% of American women are wearing the wrong bra size, and sizes can vary greatly between manufacturers! However, I decided to trace a C cup, which I wear from one of the biggest ready to wear lingerie retailers. It was much too big. For my second go, I cut the A/B (which I haven’t worn since I was 12). It fit much better, but there was still too much fabric right below the bust. I ended up adding some elastic to the bust line to pull it in so that it would be wearable, but you can see in the photographs there is excess fabric pulled in under the bustline.
The rest of the slip fits very well! The bias cut design glides over my hips and this longer length is perfect for wearing as night time lingerie or under a flowy dress. The instructions for adding the straps were a bit confusing, and I think if I did this pattern again I would do a rouleau type strap instead. While this pattern has potential, the formatting is a bit dated with hand drawn pattern pieces and illustrations. The designer has also authored a book on lingerie called ‘Lingerie Secrets’. While it is out of print, I was able to find it at my local library and a DVD version is available via Jan’s website.
Since the sheer fabric and plunging neckline mean I didn’t want to pose for modelled photographs, I pulled out a tried and true pattern, Jalie 3131, the bra and nursing tank top, and sewed up a knit camisole for underneath. I’ve sewn the nursing variation before, but this is the first time doing the regular version. I like the shelf bra option of this pattern; it keeps everything in place but is still comfortable!
The fabric for this tour was sponsored by Club Tissus. It usually is difficult to purchase apparel type woven fabrics online (most Canadian online retailers that I know are either knits or quilting cotton) but Club Tissus has anything you could possibly need to sew a garment! The selection as great and the fabric arrived quickly. I used a printed sheer chiffon for the slip and a bamboo knit for the cami.
