I’ve always been a lifelong student at heart. I love back to school; new teachers, new binders and pencils, and new clothes! I suppose that is why I became a teacher; now I can always enjoy new beginnings in September.
My girls have caught on to my excitement, and have been asking for a while what their ‘first day’ outfits will be. We don’t go back to school until after Labour Day, so I’m way ahead of schedule this year! I live in northern Canada, so our weather can be cool already in September. I wanted an outfit that would work through multiple seasons, so I went with this layered look.
Without the cardigan, the skirt and top are perfect for warm weather. The skirt is my latest pattern, the Maple Skirt. It is still on sale for $5 here until Aug 30. I sewed it out of a dark denim that I purchased locally. The topstitching is done in a thick cotton denim thread and I used hammer on jean buttons as well. My daughter loves all the details: the patch pockets on the front, the belt loops, and the adjustable buttonhole elastic at the waist means she can just pull the skirt up and down without fussing with the buttons.
The shirt is also one of my own patterns, the Chestnut Tee, that will be releasing early next week. While the pattern is drafted with long sleeves, I adapted it to be short sleeves just in case it is warm. The fabric is an amazing euro knit from L’Oiseau Fabrics. My daughter is also wearing some cute little white ballet flats.
To complete the look, I sewed up a simple sash out of some grey and white dotted cotton and a fold over elastic headband.
To make the outfit work for cooler weather, I added a pair of leggings and a cardigan. The cardigan is a free pattern that I have available here for download. It comes drafted with short sleeves, but I added the bottom 2/3 of the sleeves from the Chestnut Tee. The cardigan is a dolman style with dropped shoulders. It is sewn from a super soft stretch french terry.
The leggings are from my go to leggings pattern: the Leggin’s from Love Notions, another great free pattern. They are sewn from cotton lycra purchased from So Sew English. We changed out the ballet flats for some slouchy suede boots.
