This week’s challenge at Project Run and Play had been my favourite by far. The task was to create your own fabric. As my raw materials, I used a white IKEA bed sheet that had a rip in the corner, and 1/2 metre of white organic cotton lycra jersey knit.
And this is what I came up with!
I tried two new to me techniques for this outfit. The simple sundress was sewn out of the sheet. To create the graduated monochromatic look, I ombre dyed the whole sheet using RIT dye. This was my first time ever using this product, and I neglected to follow the directions to wear gloves, with the very predictable result of bright blue hands!
Not only did I create the fabric, I also drafted the pattern for the dress. I made the bodice pattern into a pdf, and hope to share it with you all; look for the free tutorial in the next little while!
UPDATE: Pattern is available here!
Because we don’t always have summer weather warm enough to wear a sundress, I created a little jersey knit jacket to wear with it. I used a puff sleeved tshirt pattern (Ottobre 3/2012) as the base. To make it into a jacket, I cropped the length, added an opening at centre front, and made a sweet little peter pan collar out of the leftover dyed sheet.
The hearts on the jersey knit were created using a rubber stamp and sparkly blue fabric paint. My daughter helped me pick out the paint, and according to her the sparkles are the best part of the outfit!
For a completely different look, the jacket can be worn under the sundress as well.
