Elegance and Elephants is hosting a Kid’s Choice sewalong (officially begins May 1).
The idea is that the ‘kid’ gets to choose the fabric, style, accessories, etc. I have a daughter who is very opinionated so this challenge was perfect for her!
After coming up with about a 1000 ideas, and changing her mind as many times, this is what she decided on:
– a summer outfit
– comfy shorts with no zipper
– a tank top
– some very specific kitty fabric that I had originally bought for pajamas
And this is what we came up with! My original worry was that it would look too much pajamas, and I’m still not convinced it is day wear, but we’ll probably compromise and make it a comfy outfit for ‘at home’ days.
The shorts are a super simple pattern that I tested for Ginger Baby Patterns. The Active Classics Everyday Pants and Shorts are a very versatile pattern and includes size 3 month – 12. This pattern was full of helpful hints and tricks, and the detailed instructions would make it perfect for a brand new sewist. I think this would be a great project for my 6 year old’s first try sewing with knits.
I used a black jersey knit and some green interlock. To jazz them up a bit, I reverse appliqued a star on the front. I highly recommend doing this before sewing up the shorts, it was a bit of a struggle to sew it on the completed pair!
I self drafted the tank top. I was going for a bit of a racerback look, but didn’t curve the back straps in enough. Oh well, as usual I’m all about ‘good enough’!
