My friend Fenna at FABulous Home Sewn recently released a tutorial on adding a castle applique to a sewing project. She made some fantastic shirts for her boys and has put together an excellent e-book so that you can do it too!
Instead of a tshirt, I decided to make a tote bag for my daughter. Following her directions, I appliqued the castle on a piece of twill. Of course, every castle needs a princess, so I quickly drew one up and appliqued it on as well.
The assembly of the bag was very simple, just 2 rectangles for the outer, 2 of quilting cotton for the lining, and two handles from webbing.
The only hiccup was that when I was ironing I got too close to the webbing and melted it a tiny bit. The melted ‘goop’ went onto the fabric before I realized what had happened, so you see a nice black stain on the top near the straps.
Despite the mishap, my daughter is pleased, and has been playing ‘library’ all morning by scanning her books with a tv remote and carrying them around the house 🙂
Even if you’ve never appliqued before, I recommend trying it. Fenna’s instructions are clear and she walks you through every step. You can get your instructions and template here on Craftsy.
