Today we will be doing the waistband. It looks like a lot of steps, but you can skip quite a few if you aren’t doing the adjustable buttonhole elastic. Remember, this tutorial supplements the instructions found in your tutorial.
First, create your belt loops. Fold a the strip of fabric into 4, wrong sides together, and topstitch the 2 long edges. Cut into 3″ sections.
Baste onto the right side of your skirt. There are notches on the pattern pieces that indicate their placement. The raw edges will be aligned with the raw edges of the skirt waist.
Next we are going to create the waistband. I’m going to let you in on a secret: I never use the waistband pattern pieces. I just cut strips that are a few inches longer that my model’s waistband and trim off the excess in a later step. But of course feel free to use the pattern piece provided!
With right sides together, stitch the long edges of the waistband facing to the waistband. Press the seam allowance towards the facing and understitch. You notice that the stitching doesn’t show on the waistband itself. This keeps the waistband facing from popping out.
Next sew the buttonholes and add the buttons if you are doing the adjustable waistband. Fold the 3/8″ of the waistband to the wrong side.
Stitch the waistband to the skirt with the right side of the waistband facing against the wrong side of the skirt. You may need to ease the skirt in slightly. The waistband will stick out 3/8″ beyond the edge of the skirt.
Fold the waistband so that the right sides of the waistband and facing are touching.
Stitch across the short ends.
Trim the corner and turn the waistband right side out. Now pin it very carefully so that the fold edge just covers the previous stitching line. I pin every 1-2″. From the right side, stitch in place.
Insert the buttonhole elastic if you are using it.
Tack the tops of the belt loops in place.
Woot woot! You’re almost there! Tomorrow will just be doing the buttons and buttonholes and you are all done!
