I’m really happy to be part of the Pool side Beach Party Tour. I’ve sewn swimsuits even before I knew sewing swimsuits was supposed to be difficult! They are an item that is so hard to find the perfect fit at the store, are super expensive, and use such little fabric…it just makes sense to sew!
I’ve sewn quite a few suits lately, so I couldn’t just choose one; here are a few of my recent favourites.
I’ve used Jalie 3023 several times now and each time I’m happy with the results. These suits have a good amount of coverage and are comfortable to wear for swimming lessons as well as for going to the beach.
The huge amount of sizes means that I can achieve a good fit by just mashing sizes. My daughters are both very petite and store bought suits just don’t fit, so I’m glad that I can make them at a fraction of the price!
For myself, I tried a pair of new pattern: the Patterns for Pirates Siren Swim Top and Hello Sailor Swim Bottoms.
Both were relatively easy sews, although my serger had problems with sewing all the layers when applying the band on the swim top, so I had to use my sewing machine for a few steps. I sewed both pieces without any alterations and they fit well.
The best part of this top: the support! I’ve never had a swimsuit that I’ve felt this comfortable to move in. I achieved this by adding an old underwire bra to the inner lining. I simply cut off the band and the straps, and zigzaged the bra to a layer of power mesh.
The straps, bottom band, and top edges are all reinforced with elastic, so this suit is not going anywhere!
I love sewing swimwear so much that I created a pattern for sale – the Swim & Surf Shorts. (The tankini is also self drafted).
These shorts come in two lengths, but the best part is inside: attached swim bottoms! Just pair the shorts with your favourite rash guard, bikini, or tankini, and you are ready to go.
You can buy the pattern here or click on ‘shop’ at the top of the page. I’m also currently working on a women’s version; watch for it next week.
Of course, a tour is no fun without prizes, so enter to win a great prize package:
