Recently I had the pleasure of sewing up the Paneled Sunsuit by Call Ajaire. This is her first pattern, and I wanted to help get the word out about this talented designer.
This pattern has so many options! There is a regular sunsuit, jumper, and a pants suit, plus you can sew up all the options as separates. That is 10 different views! I chose to do the shorts and the tank top.
The fabric I chose was a fun quilting cotton by Free Spirit called Fox Playground, and the dots are a coordinate from that line. The shorts are sewn from Essex Linen.
Both pieces were straight forward to sew. I really like the flat piping on the front and back of the tank top and the back elastic gives the top a fitted look with out being too tight. I did make two small modifications; I eliminated the elastic from the straps since it would not have to pull down over her hips like a sunsuit would. Also, I did find the top a little bit short for our personal taste (it ends at the natural waist) so I finished the bottom edge with bias tape instead of hemming.
The shorts also feature a pop of colour with the flat piping, and my daughter loves the pockets. The bottom elastics help keep her modest, and this style would be perfect for under a dress for younger girls. These were sewn exactly as directed.
We have very short summers here in northern Canada, so I experimented with layering it up for school. Add a sweater and a cute pair of boots, and this outfit is now ready for cooler weather. Adding a pair of tights or leggings would extend it even further into fall.
The pattern features a huge size range, from newborn to size 12. The instructions are clear, and each step features a professional looking illustration. Because of the large number of options and sizes, I did find the directions a bit overwhelming at first, but I suggest highlighting the sections that are applicable to your view so that you don’t get confused.
Next I hope to try the trousers for another fall look. I invite you to check out this pattern, as well as the other bloggers on this tour!
