I made this summery tiered sundress as part of Project Run and Play Season 9. You can see my whole outfit here and read about how I ombre dyed the fabric.
I wanted to share the pattern with you all, so here it is!
1 yard lightweight fabric
1 8” zipper
Download the bodice pattern pieces here and cut:
2 bodice fronts (lining and outer)
4 bodice backs (left and right lining and left and right outer)
Also cut the following pieces
tier A: 2 of 6″ X 18.5″
tier B: 2 of 6″ X 23″
tier C: 2 of 6″ X 29″
strap: 1 of 2″ X 17″
All seams are sewn with a 1/2” seam allowance
Fold strap piece in half lengthwise. Sew long edge. Use a safety pin to turn strap right side out. Press.
Topstitch strap on both sides. Cut strap into two equal pieces.
Baste the two back bodice pieces together at centre back. Press seam open.
Lay zipper teeth down on seam with top stop (that’s the little metal bit) of the zipper 1/2” from top edge. Pin or hand baste into place.
Using a zipper foot, sew zipper into place. Stitch across the bottom and trim excess zipper. Remove basting.
Sew front to back at side seams. Press seams open.
Baste straps in place 1/2” away from the corner.
Try on bodice to check strap length.
Sew the front and back lining together at the side seams. Press seams open. Press the back edges to the wrong side by 1/2”.
Pin lining to bodice, right sides together with straps sandwiched in between. Make sure they are out of the way when you stitch. Stitch top edges together. Turn right side out.
Sew the back lining edges to the zipper tape by sewing over previous stitching line. Baste bottom edges together.
Sew short ends of both A pieces together. Gather top edge of tier A to fit the bottom of the bodice. Pin and stitch, right sides together. Press seam up and topstitch close to edge.
Repeat with tier B and C.
Press bottom hem up 1/4” and 1/4” again. Topstitch into place.
You are done! I would love to see what you have made with this tutorial. If you link your finished project in the comments I may feature it on my blog.
